KARACHI: Japan Consul-General in Karachi Toshikazu Isomura on Tuesday inaugurated paediatric intensive care unit (ICU) at the Indus Hospital along with Indus Hospital CEO Dr Abdul Bari Khan.
The Japan Consulate General organised a press tour in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in which journalists from various media groups participated.
The group visited 2 project sites related to the child health care.
The project sites included the Child Health Institute in Karachi that was inaugurated in last December with the Japanese grant aid, and the Indus Hospital in which a new paediatric intensive care unit was set up under the Grant Assistance for the Grass-Roots Human Security Project (GGP).
During the visit at the Sindh Government’s Child Health Institute, the JICA staff members briefed about the background, purpose and significance of the “Project for Improvement of Child Health” with the provision of Rs1.38 billion to the Sindh government.
The Institute receives paediatric patients from all over Karachi, of which population is approximately 4.16 million and that of children under 12 (the beneficiary group of the project) is approximately 1.77 million. Japanese assisted institute enables the patients to receive high-quality paediatric medical services and treatment with the most sophisticated medical equipment.
The institute is run by the Pakistani NGO Poverty Eradication Initiative (PEI) through Public- Private Partnership (PPP) under the supervision of the Health Department.
On the visit to the Indus Hospital, the completion ceremony was held for “Project for provision of Medical Equipment for Paediatric Intensive Care Unit to a Hospital in Karachi”.
The Japan Government provided the Indus Hospital with the assistance of US$ 86,460 for the medical equipment installed in a paediatric intensive care unit.
On the occasion, Toshikazu Isomura remarked about the significance of the project saying that medical equipment will greatly benefit the population that have difficulty in accessing quality health care.
