Dozing at wheel one of leading causes of highway accidents

Dozing at the wheel or sleep deprivation is one of the leading causes of accidents on highways and motorways.

DIG Mirza Faran Baig said this on Saturday while relating causes of road accidents during a special awareness campaign.

Other causes, he added, include long-distance driving, business pressures, lack of awareness about traffic rules, concentration, and memory issues.

The DIG said that data analysis for the year 2016 showed dozing at the wheel in five deaths and injuries to nine persons.

The central zone briefed owners of 18,783 public service vehicles, 22,186 heavy transport vehicles, and 13,744 light transport vehicles about precautionary measures against sleeping while driving.

It was revealed that 32 wake-up points have been established on prominent places at the N-5 to lessen the chances of accidents.
