The mood in Sweden was one of outrage and shock as three men of foreign origins have been arrested on suspicion of gang-raping a woman and streaming it live on facebook.

Police claimed that they were building a solid case against the men as evidence against them “grows stronger.” The event might also give credence to increasing resentment against immigrants in the country, which took in more asylum seekers per capita than any other European country.

“There have been cases in Sweden before where crimes have been filmed and publicized on social media but not like this,” said Pontus Melander, chief prosecutor in the case in Uppsala, the city where the alleged incident took place in an apartment Jan. 22.

The pair accused of the crime are from Afghanistan and have rejected taking part in the crime, which carries a sentence of two to six years in Sweden.

It is not clear if the two Afghan men are recent asylum seekers, but witness statements published in Swedish news media have stoked anger at migrants as Europe tries to deal with hundreds of thousands of people flooding in from predominantly Muslim countries
