Kashmir Solidarity Day

“…and miles to go before I sleep”

The Kashmiris in Indian controlled Valley have been subjected to atrocities in the past too but the ones committed under the present BJP government have broken all previous records. The peaceful protests which erupted after the killing of Burhan Muzaffar Wani were spontaneous and regarded as entirely home grown by the international media. The attempts made to put down the protests, however, violated all norms of civilised behaviour. Pellet guns used to disperse peaceful processions led to over one thousand youth suffering eye injuries. A New York Times editorial called the period which was characterised by sheer horror the “year of the dead eyes’.

On Sunday a Kashmir Solidarity Day was observed both in AJK and Pakistan Pakistan. In his message, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif made it known that the dream of peace and prosperity of the people of Pakistan and India will remain elusive unless the Kashmir dispute is resolved in accordance with the United Nations Security Council resolutions. The Pakistan army has released a stirring song entitled “Sangbaz” or the stone throwers to pay homage to the Kashmiri’s struggle for freedom. Pakistan’s observance of Kashmir Solidarity Day has been hailed by Kashmiri leaders that include Syed Ali Geelani and Syed Shabbir Ahmed Shah.

While expressing solidarity with the Kashmiris, Pakistan has to provide full political and moral support to the people of the occupied Kashmir but must in no case get directly involve in the conflict. The Kashmiris know that being a responsible state Pakistan cannot go beyond a limit

There are elements in the country however who want direct intervention in Kashmir. They need to be reined in. The detention of Hafiz Saeed was a step in the direction. The authorities did well to to stop the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) from holding a multi-party conference on Kashmir in Hyderabad. As Rana Sanaullah put it the stance of JuD over Kashmir is incompatible with Pakistan’s perspective. Being a law abiding country Pakistan must never allow its territory to be used as a launching pads for attacks on neighbouring countries irrespective of the justifications offered.
