PAE organizes symposium on “Innovative Thar Coal Value Chain”

The Pakistan Academy of Engineering organized a one-day symposium on “Innovative Thar Coal Value Chain” here on Saturday.

The symposium was organized in collaboration with Institute of Applied Energy and New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan. The opening ceremony was followed by a keynote address by Takashi Nakamoto, NEDO, Japan. He delivered his talk on NEDO activities on clean coal technologies. The distinguished guests were welcomed by Dr Jameel Ahmed Khan, president of the academy.

The symposium aimed at to bring together experts, specialists and researchers from Japan for intensive discussion about innovative coal value chains and the wide range of thermo-conversion issues linked to coal conversion.

The preliminary feasibility study was conducted by the Institute of Applied Energy, Japan, in cooperation with Pakistan Academy of Engineering and many related organizations.

Based on the data of Thar coal and field survey of the mining site, the technical study and economic evaluation was conducted to produce Ammonia, Urea, Methanol, Hydrogen from Thar coal, using Japanese technologies.

The cost of Methanol and Urea depends on coal and oil prices and the market prices of the chemicals. Further study is expected to realize the project using Thar coal.
