Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said that Pakistan will continue to show diplomatic and moral support towards Palestine.

While addressing a joint press conference with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, PM Nawaz said, “Pakistani people and government have always stood with the Palestinian brothers.”

Nawaz Sharif referred to the newly constructed Palestinian embassy building in Islamabad and said the project would be a symbol of our brotherly relations.

Pakistan has always supported the just cause of Palestinian people at all forums and this position has been being reiterated during the visit of the Palestinian President.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said, “Ensuring peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved without a just settlement of the Palestine-Israeli dispute.”

He called for the implementation of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions calling for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied territory.

He said, “Establishment of a viable, independent and contagious state of Palestine with pre-1969 borders and Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital only guarantees for sustainable peace in the region.”

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas thanked Pakistan for its steadfast support for the cause of Palestinian people besides financial assistance and scholarships for Palestinian students in Pakistani universities.

Mahmoud Abbas said that he briefed the Prime Minister of Pakistan on the latest developments in respect of Middle East crisis including Israeli settlements and the US decision to shift its embassy to Jerusalem.

Earlier today, the two leaders held a one-on-one meeting where they reviewed all aspects of bilateral relations and avenues for further cooperation.

A formal welcome ceremony for the visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was held at Prime Minister House.

National anthems of the two countries were played on the occasion. A contingent of the armed forces presented salute and guard of honour to the Palestinian President. The visiting dignitary inspected the guard of honour.

The prime minister introduced the cabinet members to the Palestinian president who then introduced the PM to the members of his entourage.
