A day after the Punjab government declared the services of mobile-application taxi service providers Careem, Uber and A-One as illegal, the Sindh government on Tuesday also sought legal action against these companies.

The Sindh government has declared the use of private cars as taxis without the mandatory legal permits as “illegal” and has contacted PTA as it seeks to block Careem’s mobile app.

Secretary Transport said in a statement that he wrote five letters to Careem management as a warning but received no reply.

The provincial government has also initiated action against Uber to bring the app within ‘official compliance’.

According to the Secretary Transport, private cars would need to be made commercial in order to be used as taxis.

Owners of the cars would be required to obtain fitness certificates for the cars. Route permits would be needed before the cars can be used as taxis, he added.

In a notification issued by the Punjab Transport Authority earlier, it said that as the aforementioned companies are ‘illegally’ using private cars for services the provincial government is facing huge financial losses. The notification added that cars are being used as taxis without the mandatory car-fitness certificates and route permits.

The notification further mentioned that as security clearances of drivers are also not obtained from concerned authorities, orders have been issued for strict action against the aforementioned companies.

Moreover, in a crackdown earlier today, three car owners have been barred from riding.

  1. I don’t understand why no action is taken against the heavy vehicles specially trucks carrying containers from MT Khan Road to Main Korangi Road due to which mostly schools and offices people are disturbed. These trucks carrying containers were given instructions in Karachi by the government to move on roads from 22:30 till morning 06:00 the next day but they are freely moving in the day time and no government officials have ever taken any action against them. Even children begging on streets with wipers in their hands and traffic Police warden are present on the streets busy stopping the bike riders who are not wearing helmet, nobody is bothered about those beggars why they are on streets?

I think in fact I suggest to the government to take appropriate action against trucks carrying containers & beggars standing on streets with wipers and then they have rights to ban Careem Services in Pakistan specially in Karachi.

  2. Where are fitness certificate for third class taxi cars of model 1977 and 80s???This Careem and Uber service is helping so much in giving relief to all female students and female employees plus all of us. You just cannot compare your third class taxi who are allowed by you of model 1977, model 1980s year with a very advanced careem and uber. It is an atomic bomb from your side to destroy people life and welfare by banning careem and uber

  3. Govt is just to stop the private initiatives and modern facilities, rather than to provide the mass level commuter schemes for the public.

  4. The government sucker do not provide any facility to people and whoever do a good job they always prompt to ruin it
    Hopeless people in Sindh Government

  5. Govt ko sharam ani chahiye kis fitness certificate ki bat kar rahe hai yeh halat dekho taxi’s ki karachi mai jo gaari road par chalne ke qabil nahi us ka fitness certificate bana howa hai.. Andheer nagri hai pakistan mai

  6. Where the fitness certificates of 30-40 yrs old black taxis, rickshaws which drivers are without license, historical unbalanced buses, wagons?
The fare of these transports are not regulated. These vehicles are totally uncomfortable and risky.
Other then this these advance transport companies like Careem, Uber has their criteria. Transparent transaction system, inspection and selection of cars, customer services and so many payment options..
Mostly public transports run by political persons, policemen, and some are giving commissions to them.

  7. Very pathetic decision .Normal taxis fare are very high as well as in very bad condition .Uber and careem provide great relief to common pepole .Its all about why they not provide bribe to these so called government organizations.

  8. Fitness Certificate….. ???!!! The most unfit vehicles are the commercial ones which are issued these so called fitness certificates. Just like everything else, this Sindh govt is making a fool of its people. The govt depts are facing loss of revenue which pains them. So, find another way to make up for it. What facility or service has this Sindh govt provided to the people of Karachi or the province? Broken, non-functional infrastructure, police that is on vip duty only, mass scale corruption and now a ban on one of the most convenient and affordable service from the private sector…??? Shame. Time to wake up, people and see these politicians as what they really are… leeches, vutures and snakes
