RIYADH: Germany has been training dozens of female Saudi border guards under an agreement concluded between the two countries.

The women will be taught skills including personal protection, preliminary investigation, identity verification, arrest and inspection, confiscation of seized items, the Saudi General Directorate of Border Guard said in a statement. The 45 women participating in the programme are part of 60 female inspectors posted across the kingdom’s frontiers after their graduation from the Naif Arab University for Security Sciences.

News of the training came a week after the interior ministry claimed miscreants had been using female companions and donning the abaya to execute terrorist attacks. Recent security operations revealed that suspects had tried to slip past pickets using the loose over-garment.

In other similar instances, women were recruited to facilitate attacks. Some suspects even made sure they had female partners to secure housing in residential areas.
