ISLAMABAD: Debate over allotment of land to Army officers with intent to maligning Army also has the potential to create misunderstanding between state institutions thus considered detrimental to existing cohesion, a press release of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) stated.
The army defended its former chief General Raheel Sharif against attempts to blow out of proportion the allotment of prime agriculture land to him, saying it was neither unusual nor unconstitutional.
In a strong rejoinder to reports questioning the allotment of 90 acres to General (retd) Raheel Sharif, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) clarified that land was allotted strictly in accordance with the ‘constitutional provisions.’
The press release was issued after a news report regarding the allotment of 90 acres of prime land to the former chief of army staff (COAS) General (r) Raheel Sharif is doing circles in media.
It further states, “Issue of allotment of agricultural land to Army officers and soldiers is being debated and conjecture for last few days”.
The ISPR further said, “It may be known that such allotments are through constitutional provision. Allotment to former COAS General Raheel Sharif Retd is also under same provision and through government/ Army Procedures”.
Military sources clarified that he was allotted 50 acres as a four star general and 40 acres for serving as the army chief. Sources said the land was meant only for agricultural use and cannot be used for any commercial activity.
The former COAS is being subject to innuendo and mudslinging by the present Govt. First there was unnessary ,uncorrobrated rumours of his being the head of moslem Nato. This was done by the defence minister who should have known better. Now this land deal! What is the ulterior motive
