Depilex calls for standardisation of skin creams to protect consumers’ health

The Depilex Smile Again Foundation has called for mandatory standardisation of skin creams in Pakistan to protect the health of consumers.

According to a press release, the need for regulation is highlighted by recent international media reports that have exposed a number of Pakistan origin creams as being poisonous for consumers. These creams contain a dangerous mix of chemicals that have been proved to be harmful to consumers because of the high levels of mercury. In addition, such actions also malign the reputation of the country, affecting its trade relations with countries across the world.

Depilex SmileAgain Foundation CEO Musarrat Misbah said, “Over the last few years, doctors across Pakistan have witnessed an increasing number of skin diseases resulting from prolonged use of substandard skin whitening creams, which has been verified by research done by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute in Islamabad.”

In 2016, the PSQCA finalised PS-3228/2016-skin creams. This standard currently allows kin cream manufacturers to voluntarily adopt manufacturing practices that are in line with global standards. It is now important that these standards become mandatory to ensure that the consumer of Pakistan and our country’s industrial reputation is protected from malicious interests.
