A court in Srinagar on Wednesday accepted the bail application of the senior Hurriyat leader and Muslim League (ML) Chairman, Masarat Alam Bhat.

“Srinagar City Magistrate has accepted the bail application of Bhat, and has directed the police to release him,” ML’s legal cell in-charge, Shah Reyaz, told KNS.

“Police have no authority now to put the party chairman behind bars,” he said.

Reyaz said that Bhat’s bail plea, in a case registered in the year 2010 under number 59/2010, has been accepted by the court today, and directed the police to release him.

“After producing Alam to Srinagar City Court, he was shifted to sub-jail Baramullah,” Reyaz said, adding that the incarcerated chairman will produce the court orders himself in the sub-jail.

“The decision of Alam’s release will be known only after he will produce court orders before police,” Reyaz said.

Masarat was released after four-and-half years of detention soon after the PDP-BJP government took charge in March last year.

However, he was re-arrested on April 17, 2015 and detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) for alleged anti-national activities during a rally to welcome Geelani home from Delhi.
