Punjab Emergency Service Rescue 1122 responded to over 23,8782 emergency calls of road accidents and rescued 28,3085 people, safely transporting them to hospitals during the last year.
227,390 accidents calls were reported in 2015, with an increase of 11,392 accident related calls over the year compared to 2015. The 112,616 drivers involved in the accidents included 7,296 underage drivers. 39,361 pedestrians and 131,108 passengers were also among the victims of the road accidents.
The statistics show that 46,060 road accidents were reported to the Lahore Control Room, which affected 47,234 persons, placing the provincial capital at the top of the list, followed by 23,400 road accident reports in Faisalabad with 27,977 victims, and Multan at third position with 13,906 road accident reports and 16,438 victims.
The stats further revealed that out of the 283,085 victims who were affected by traffic collisions, 224,407 were men and 58,678 women. According to the data, 194,966 motorbikes, 35,461 rickshaws, 25,693 motorcars, 12,961 vans, 3,123 buses, 7875 trucks and 25,844 other types of vehicles (including carts) were involved in the accidents.
The main cause of accidents in Lahore was observed to be over-speeding by youngsters 11-20 years of age.
Punjab Rescue Director General Dr Rizwan Naseer reviewed the data of traffic collision reports recorded in 2016 and showed serious concern about the increasing number of accidents. He said that 90% of traffic collisions involved motorbikes.
He said that a functioning road safety system was of vital importance for the protection of human lives.
