Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah discharged IG Sindh Police A D Khawaja of all duties and sent him on ‘forced leave’ for 15-days on Monday, following the federal government’s refusal to remove the IG from his post. Khawaja is said to have handed over a two-week application to the Sindh chief secretary.
A day earlier, a bench of the Supreme Court (SC) headed by Justice Amir Hani Muslim had directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to expeditiously probe corruption charges against Sindh police officers, including Ghulam Haider Jamali, and present a report within a month.
The apex court also directed the provincial chief secretary to state what action the government will take against officers found guilty of corruption, which included the provincial police chief, adding that the SC would pass such orders otherwise.
Khawaja, a member of the inquiry committee, had submitted reports before the top court regarding irregularities in the appointment of police officers.
Sources claim that all responsibilities of A D Khawaja have been handed over to Additional IG Mushtaq Meher. However, the AIG denied that any such move had taken place and stated that no notification had been issued regarding the matter.
Sources revealed that the Sindh government’s decision regarding the IG’s removal is for several reasons, including the Pakistan People’s Party’s desire to appoint Rao Anwar as SSP Malir.
The federal government removed IG Ghulam Haider Jamali on November 12 and appointed Khawaja in his place following a Supreme Court directive.
