Religious Affairs Minister Sardar Muhammad Yousaf said on Sunday that interfaith harmony and promotion of tolerance is a need of the hour, for which everyone must fulfil his responsibility in the establishment of durable peace in the society.

He was addressing the inaugural session of International Seerat Conference on “Interfaith Harmony in the Light of Teachings of Islam and Life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH)” at a local hotel.

On this occasion, Turkey’s Religious Affairs President Prof Dr Mehmet Gormez was also prominent among other Muslim and non-Muslim religious scholars from within the country and abroad.

The minister termed the holding of International Seerat Conference as a good effort for gathering renowned scholars and intellectuals at one platform to forge unity, tolerance and harmony among various religions. Pakistan, he added, would continue with such endeavours to achieve this vital and sacred cause.

Sardar Yousaf was of the view that today, religious education of people was indispensable for their enhanced correlation and establishment of peace in society, asserting that welfare and service to humanity were great causes and it must be everyone’s motto. Unfortunately, he said, the element of terrorism had penetrated into the society, instead of the well-being of humanity. He added, “It is high time that we must show seriousness to this grave situation; otherwise, our coming generation will be facing the brunt of this menace.”

He stressed the need for adopting and implementing such proposals which lead us to weed out terrorism and extremism, and help in restoring durable peace and harmony in society.

He mentioned that first day of the conference featured four panels comprising 20 Muslim and non-Muslim scholars each for detailed discussions on the following topics:

(a) Principles of Harmony for Peace, (b) Role of Media for Peace, (c) Role of Religious Leaders for Promotion of Harmony, (d) Formation of Syllabus and Textbooks to Forge Harmony. In the light of the penal discussion, he maintained that those aspects and proposals would be explored, which were acceptable to everyone.

Having crux of the penal discussions, he said, a joint communique would also be an issue at the end of the conference, adding that it would prove a milestone for forging peace and harmony in the society and among various religions.

On this occasion, Turkey’s Dr Mehmet Gormez said that Pakistan and Turkey were not just brothers but twin brothers. He mentioned that Holy Prophet’s (Peace be upon him) birthday week had been celebrated in Turkey since 1389 Hijri. Gormez said that Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) was the prophet of entire mankind and universe.
