Around 6,444 female migrant workers proceeded to different countries during the years 2008 to 2013, which stands 0.12 percent of the total migrant workers going overseas.
According to the `Labour Migration from Pakistan 2015 Status Report’ issued by Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, out of total 6,444, the highest number (3,860) women went to United Arab Emirates followed by 1,153 from Saudi Arabia.
The other prominent destination countries of Pakistani women migrant workers have been Oman, United States, United Kingdom and Qatar during the said period.
Around 205 female migrant workers proceeded to Oman, 175 to United States, 170 to United Kingdom, 142 to Qatar, 118 to Canada, 115 to Bahrain, 99 to Kuwait, 96 to Malaysia and 311 to other countries.
The report stated that the migration of Pakistani women is limited to a few occupations, primarily in the fields of health services, finance sector, cosmetology and fashion designing, either due to social and cultural issues or to government permission.
Of the 6,444 women who migrated from 2008-13, 1,437 worked as cleaners or housemaids (22.3 percent), 753 worked as accountants (11.7 percent), 662 as saleswomen (10.3 percent) and the remainder worked as doctors, beauticians or nurses.
Around 607 women migrated to work as Manager or investor, 606 clerk or typist, 462 teacher, 445 doctor, 284 beautician, 272 Nurse, 148 Babycare and 768 for other fields.
The data was provided through Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment (BEOE) working under Ministry of Overseas and Human Resource Development.
The Overseas Employment Corporation (OEC), another department working under Overseas Ministry, also facilitates migration.
According to the OEC data for 2014-15, some 2,659 women went abroad for employment with the majority (2,256) going to Saudi Arabia.
