Senate Special Committee on Marginalised Segments, on Friday, recommended equal rights for transgenders in a meeting held at the parliament house.
The committee said the transgender community should be equally treated like other citizens and must be provided with Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) accordingly.
Senator Nisar Muhammad headed the committee.
Minister for Law and Justice Zahid Hamid , members of the committee including, Senator Farhatullah Babar, Senator Sitara Ayaz, Senator Rubina Khalid and Senator Samina Abid also attended the meeting.
The committee decided on the proposal of Senator Farhatullah Babar that in the next meeting, the representatives of transgender community would also be invited to be a part of this initiative and highlights the problems being faced by them in the society.
The committee also decided that National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) officials would also be invited on the issue related to transgender community’s CNICs.
The committee also asked the National Commission on Human Rights (NCHR) to brief it in next meeting about the overall performance of the commission.
The committee expresses reservation over the performance of NCHR and ask it to brief committee about the steps taken for the welfare of the marginalised section of the society, including transgenders and Kalash community and others.
Zahid Hamid said the CNICs should be issued to the transgender community giving their dues rights by the state.
