The Energy Efficiency Management Project (EEMP) of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has enabled 13 industrial units of automotive and foundry sectors to save 866 MW energy yearly

JICA Pakistan Chief Representative Yasuhiro TOJO said here on Thursday at a seminar arraigned by SMEDA to share results of the project. The Government of Pakistan and JICA dispatched 4 energy experts in March 2015 for technical assistance to reduce energy inefficiencies in the auto parts and foundry sectors of Pakistan.

He informed about various initiatives taken by JICA towards SME development in Pakistan. The seminar was also addressed by SMEDA GM for Business and Sector Development Haroon Ahmad Khan, Industry Support Department Head Ashfaq Ahmad, Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Association Chairman (PAAPAM) Mashhood Ahmad Khan, PAAPAM’s Skill Development Center Chairman Iftikhar Ahmad and Pakistan Foundry Association Secretary Abdul Rashid. Senior Japanese energy expert Morihito Taka Yama gave a detailed presentation on the results and impact of EEMP on the selected SMEs.

The prime objective of the project was to reduce energy inefficiencies at SMEs’ workplaces by introducing Japanese energy conservation tools & methodologies and management practices, he said and informed that as a result of the project’s field activities, considerable amount of energy savings had been realized by implementing improvement plans suggested by JICA energy experts both in the fields of electrical and mechanical. So far, annual energy savings of over 866,000 KW have been realized out of the total identified potential of 1,3527,27 KW. He also offered full support of JICA in future for development of SMEs industrial sectors of Pakistan.

JICA energy experts team leader Morihito Takayama gave a detailed presentation on the project activities focusing on electrical technology and subsequent improvement approaches to overcome the on-floor wastages of energy. Another Japanese energy expert Hirayama highlighted the key findings about thermal technology and lighting systems. He also underlined the key features of best practices manual prepared as part of project activities. Fellow Japanese energy expert Fukushima presented details about energy saving potential in compressors along with cooling tower & generator technology.

Speaking on this occasion, SMEDA B&SDS Division General Manager Haroon Ahmed Khan appreciated the utmost support of JICA and effective cooperation of trade associations for making the project a real success. The Industry Support Cell informed that since March 2015, SMEDA, under the guidance of JICA energy experts the best energy management practices in 13 industrial units both in Punjab and Sindh regions had been introduced. He said that during this process of over one year and 9 months detailed energy audits were conducted in these 13 industrial units focusing on various areas of energy wastages including compressors, casting, injection moulding, press/forging, generators, lighting were identified and improvement plan suggested accordingly by the JICA experts team. The solutions have also been provided for effective management of power factor, cables’ selection, inverter applications and controlling harmonics to these industrial units.
