SC to form inquiry commission to probe Panama Leaks case

A larger bench of the Supreme Court headed by Cheif Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali on Wednesday adjourned the Panama case hearing and hinted at forming an inquiry commission comprised of one Judge to investigate the allegations levelled in the petitions by both parties.

The Supreme Court asked both parties to decide over the formation of a commission. The commission will comprise one judge and be able to call anyone as part of the probe.

Regarding the formation of a commission, PTI’s lawyer Naeem Bukhari asked for a day’s time, while the Prime Minister’s legal team began consultations.

During the case hearing, Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali asked on which date Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter purchased the land and made payment for it.

The prime minister’s counsel Salman Butt argued that the prime minister does not need to reveal his tax files.

During the hearing Justice, Asif Khosa said that we do not give a verdict without legal evidence. “This is a great defence that my father knows and I don’t.”

“You should rather say I don’t know how the money was paid,” Justice Ameer Hani Muslim said.

Salman Butt argued that the records are 40 years old and it is difficult for him to find documents.

To this Justice, Khosa said, that in your speeches you had said that you had all the documents. “All these financial matters were between grandfather and grandson,” Justice Khosa remarked.

Salman Aslam Butt informed court the land was purchased on April 9, 2011 and money was gifted by Nawaz Sharif. Maryam had paid back money to her father in form of land.

Salman Butt said Maryam Nawaz lives in Jati Umra.

“Is Jati Umra property in Maryam Nawaz’s name? Who pays for the expenses,” asked Justice Azmat Saeed.

The defence lawyer said Maryam earns through agriculture.
