The International Day of Persons with Disabilities will be observed on December 3 (Saturday) all over the world, including Pakistan.
According to a report aired by a private news channel, the theme for 2016 is ‘Achieving 17 Goals for the Future We Want’, which draws attention to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and how these goals can create a more inclusive and equitable world for persons with disabilities.
The annual theme provides a frame for considering how people with disability are excluded from society by promoting the removal of all types of barriers; including those relating to the physical environment, information and communications technology (ICT), and attitudinal barriers.
This day has been occurring since 1992 when the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the 3rd of December as the International Day of Disabled Persons.
The aim of Disability Day is to encourage a better understanding of people affected by a disability, together with helping to make people more aware of the rights, dignity, and welfare of disabled people, as well as to raise awareness about the benefits of integrating disabled persons into every aspect of society, from economic, to political, and cultural.
Many events will be held on and around the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Many of these events aim to involve groups of people from all sections of society in upholding the rights of persons with disabilities and to celebrate the contributions by persons with disabilities to their communities.
