World HIV/AID’s Day is being observed on Thursday (December 1) to raise awareness about the AID’s pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection.

Globally there are an estimated 34 million people who have the virus and more than 35 million people have died of HIV/AIDs.

In Pakistan, nearly 100,000 people are living with HIV virus, but only 15,370 are registered with 21 HIV treatment centres.

The reason for low registration rate is the stigma attached to the disease.

World AIDs Day was the first ever global health day, held for the first time in 1988.
