  • Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa assumes command at ceremony held at Army Hockey Stadium

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Tuesday said that the situation at the Line of Control (LoC) would be alright in near future.

He was talking to reporters after the change of command ceremony. To a question about the situation at LoC, he responded: “It will be alright.” Gen Bajwa appreciated the role the media played in nation-building and encouraged it to continue making contributions that strengthen society. He said that the media would be kept in the loop with regards to undertaking his responsibilities, Radio Pakistan reported.

Change of command

Earlier, General Qamar Javed Bajwa officially took charge as the 16th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) during the change of command ceremony at the Army Hockey Stadium near General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.

During the ceremony, Gen Raheel Sharif handed over the ceremonial command baton to General Qamar Bajwa.

General Raheel Sharif, the chief guest at the ceremony, had reviewed the guard of honour and addressed the ceremony. The military band played national and folk songs for the amusement of the audience.

Former army chiefs, senior military officials, federal ministers, members of the Parliament and foreign diplomats attended the ceremony.

Before the ceremony, COAS Gen Qamar Bajwa and Gen Raheel Sharif had visited the Yadgar-e-Shuhada in GHQ, where they laid floral wreaths and offered fatiha for the martyrs.

CJSC

Also on Tuesday, newly-appointed Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Zubair Mehmood Hyat met President Mamnoon Hussain at the President’s House.

The president congratulated the CJSC on assuming his office. He said that terrorism had been brought under control to a wide extent through Operation Zarb-e-Azb. The CJSC also called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

  1. It was a treat to witness the ceremony live on TV. So well organized and graceful. Quite opposite of our civilian side of Government. The outgoing CAOS also spoke of uncontrolled corruption in the country, accountability and non-implementation of NAP.
