The initiative by the City District Government Lahore (CDGL) and Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WCCI) to set up women-owned stalls at Shadman Sunday Bazaar is a welcome one. The move calls for applause as it will help women’s economic development and provide them a platform to show their talent and skills. Since 51 per cent of the total population of Pakistan comprises of women therefore, it is essential to harness their potential in constructive ways for the socio-economic development of the country. Keeping this in mind, the Punjab Government has taken a number of steps for the progress and prosperity of women and establishment of Daycare Centers for working women, allocation of 40 per cent share for females in the Skill Development Programme, setting up of Career Counseling Centers for female students and last but not the least the passage of Women’s Rights Bill are ample proof that the government is committed to women empowerment agenda. It is hoped that the government would remain sincere in its efforts to empower women and grant them their just status in society.
