A fire was still raging in an oil storage tank in the Kemari oil terminal on Sunday more than 22 hours later.
Huge flames were still seen in an oil depot of Pakistan State Oil (PSO) in Kemari harbour. Fire brigade officials said the fire could not be brought under control yesterday.
Mustafa Moussi said fires were burning at five of the terminal’s 13 storage tanks, one of which was close to collapse.
Three snorkels were spraying foam and water in order to control the fire while fifteen fire tenders of KPT, Pakistan Navy and the City District Government were also at work trying to put out the fire.
As many as 15 fire tenders and three snorkels were on the scene, trying to extinguish the blaze.
Reportedly, two people were killed and another was injured in the tragic incident.
A KPT official said the two deceased were the surveyors of a private oil firm. Another of the surveyors was reported missing, he added.
The KPT official was of the view that the cause of the fire could not be ascertained immediately.
He further stated that the first focus was to put out the blaze.
Unlike petroleum fires, methanol fires can be extinguished with plain water. A methanol-based fire burns invisibly, unlike gasoline, which burns with a visible flame.
It"s time PSO invested in effective firefighting capability. They had a fire at their lube oil packing plant completely gutting it. This also goes for KPT, Navy and the government too. Oil storage tanks are primary targets in a war. We are ill prepared for emergencies. What a shame!!! Wake Planners!
