The visiting British foreign secretary Boris Johnson was feted at a dinner in Islamabad at the UK High Commissioner’s residence on Thursday.

Several politicians were present at the event, most prominently PPP chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. The PTI’s Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the PPP’s Aitezaz Ahsen, the PML’s Musaddiq Malik, the Saifullahs of the assorted parties, were also present.

Speaking at the dinner, the foreign secretary said that he was impressed with the strides that Pakistan has made in a number of areas.

However, he added, things weren’t as good when it came to the country’s relationship with its neighbouring countries. All the nations in the region should get along splendidly, but not to the extent of forming a unified monetary union, he quipped, a reference to the Brexit referendum of this year, when the UK chose by vote, to leave the European Union monetary and trade union. Johnson’s side, Exit, had won.

At the dinner, Shah Mehmood Qureshi was seen and heard, trying to convince the PPP’s Aitezaz Ahsen over to his party’s point of view and to support it during the debate on the upcoming 24th amendment to the constitution.
