Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday was informed that Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) London leader Kunwar Khalid Younus, who had been detained under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO), has been released from the prison.

The SHC bench, headed by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto, was hearing the petition filed by Naz Khalid Kunwar, the wife of MQM leader Kunwar Khalid Younus, who had moved for release and provision of medical facilities to her ailing spouse.

In Wednesday’s hearing, the provincial government law officer informed the bench that the MQM London leader was released from jail on 20th November. He was arrested from outside the Karachi Press Club on October 21 and was detained under MPO along with two other leaders of his party- Hasan Zafar and Amjadullah Khan.

Earlier, the petitioner had submitted that the Rangers personnel had arrested her spouse along with other MQM leaders outside Karachi Press Club on October 21 as they were en route to address a press conference. Later, she said, she came to know through the media that her spouse was detained with other leaders under MPO.

She informed the court that her husband was a senior citizen and suffering from various diseases, adding that family members were not being allowed to see him in prison. The wife of the detained MQM leader submitted that there were no criminal charges against Kunwar Khalid, and expressing the fear that her spouse would be implicated in fictitious criminal cases. The petitioner requested the SHC to direct the jail authorities to allow relatives of detainee to meet him in prison as per jail manual. The court was further requested to order provision of treatment to MQM London leader as he is ailing.
