An Anti-Terrorism Court Wednesday (today) handed death penalty to five men for their involvement in the burning alive of a Christian couple in Kot Radha Kishan in 2014.

The five men identified as Mehdi Khan, Riaz Kambo, Irfan Shakoor, Muhammad Hanif, and Hafiz Ishtiaq ─ a local prayer leader ─ were also fined Rs200,000 for their involvement in the lynching.

Eight others have also been charged with involvement in the lynching and sentenced to two years each in prison.

The eight men were identified as Muhammad Hussain, Noorul Hasan, Muhammad Arsalan, Muhammad Haris, Muhammad Muneer, Muhammad Ramazan, Irfan and Hafiz Shahid.

In November 2014, an enraged mob of hundreds beat Shama and Shazad and threw them alive in the brick kiln where they worked, for their alleged involvement in the desecration of the Holy Quran in Kot Radha Kishan, Kasur District.

Both husband and wife were brick kiln workers from Chak-59 of Kot Radha Kishan, a town in Kasur district. The woman, the mother of three, was pregnant.

Blasphemy is a highly sensitive issue in Pakistan, with even unproven allegations often prompting mob violence. Anyone convicted or even just accused, of insulting Islam, risks a violent and bloody death at the hands of vigilantes.
