Senior PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira admitted on Tuesday that it was a mistake to grant an extension to the tenure of the army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani by his government.
“I admit it proved to be a wrong decision in the end,” Kaira said on TV.
“General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani was a popular army chief and we were in a state of war… Therefore, we decided to extend his term,” he said.
Despite General Kayani being an intelligence officer, the second term did not do him any good either, he added.
Kaira’s remarks came a day after PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari defended his decision to extend the term of General Kayani.
“General Kayani’s extension strengthened my government as well as the Parliament at that time,” Zardari told senior journalist Hamid Mir
