Anti-polio vaccination drive begins in Punjab, KP and Balochistan

Three-day anti-polio vaccination drive started on Wednesday to rid the country of the disease with comprehensive security arrangements for the vaccinators in view of threats from anti-state elements.

According to reports, the vaccination campaign started in eight districts of Punjab, twelve districts of Balochistan and all the districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while it could not be launched in Sindh province.

Punjab has fixed target of vaccination of six million children in Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, DG Khan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, RTY Khan and Sheikhupura.Children below the age of five years.

Health department said that there had been polio case in Punjab during the current year.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 5.6 million children will be inoculated. Emergency operation centre KHP said that the vaccination campaign has been launched in all the 24 districts of the province.

In Balochistan, polio vaccination has started in 12 districts where 1.6 million children will be vaccinated. The polio vaccination will be carried out in Dera Bugti, QilaSaifullah, Qila Abdullah, Naseerabad, Jafirabad, Khuzdar, Pishin, Loralai, Quetta, Jhal Magsi, Zhob and Sherani.

Comprehensive security arrangements have been made for the polio teams in view of the past experience when the vaccinators were killed and injured.

Reports said that the vaccination campaign could not start in Sindh province despite emergence of two more polio cases taking the total number to seven.
