DTH auction to be held today: PEMRA chief

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Chairman Absar Alam has said that auction of DTH would be held today (Wednesday) at 11am adding that the digital technology was need of the hour while besides Pakistan all the countries of the region were using DTH technology.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, PEMRA Chairman Absar Alam said that Supreme Court has ruled that process of DTH would not be stopped adding, ‘We respect courts, now we are waiting for judgment of Lahore High Court’.

He assured that the entire process of DTH auction would be transparent while he also informed that the PEMRA would also give training to TV channels and others regarding the DTH.

Absar said, ‘We will take care of cable operators and we will fulfil what we promised’. He further said that cable operators have no reason for strike. He said that the DTH would not cause any harm to cable system adding that cable system was still functional in Europe and USA while DTH attracted upper middle class and above.

Meanwhile, the cable operators’ protest over the auction of Direct-To-Home (DTH) service on Tuesday entered the second consecutive day, suspending cable services to several areas.

The cable operators have said that the government has not been able to satisfy the association over the DTH issue. They said that the matter spoiled due to the involvement of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

The operators have demanded that the auction should be suspended at every cost. Cable operators suspended their service a day before in different areas of the country after unsuccessful dialogue with the government on the issue of DTH service.
