Noose to be tightened around private medical colleges violating merit policy

Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Punjab Secretary Najam Ahmed Shah said that Pakistan Medical and Dental Council’s (PMDC) admission policy would be followed in the admission of Private Medical and Dental Colleges on transparent and merit basis under the aegis of University of Health Sciences, Lahore.

The provincial admission committee will also inform PMDC regarding the violation of rules and regulations by few private medical and dental colleges and for taking necessary action against them according to the law, he said.

He expressed these views while talking to media persons regarding the admission policy for private medical and dental colleges at University of Health Sciences (UHS) on Monday. Representative of PMDC Dr Amir Bandesha and UHS Vice Chancellor Professor Junaid Sarfraz Khan were also present on the occasion.

Najam Ahmed Shah said that a meeting of provincial admission committee held at UHS discussed in detail the implementation on admission policy of 2016 of PMDC for private medical and dental colleges. He said that provincial admission committee condemned the medical and dental colleges who are trying to misguide the students and their parents and openly violating the merit policy which is defaming the profession of medicine.

He said that the admission committee was also sending its recommendations to the PMDC for taking legal action against such colleges. Junaid Sarfraz Khan informed that according to the new admission policy of PMDC, so far 6544 students have applied for the admission in private medical and dental colleges.

Dr Amir Bandesha informed that 146th meeting of PMDC council was held on November 19 in Islamabad in which the Punjab government’s initiatives taken for the admission in medical and dental colleges were appreciated by the council.

He said that PMDC had informed all the medical universities/colleges that no admission against the merit policy would be acceptable and UHS as well as PMDC would not register such admissions. Moreover, provincial admission committee has asked the parents and students that they should not approach any private medical and dental college for admission and instead get in contact with UHS, Nishter Medical College Multan and Rawalpindi Medical College for depositing admission forms according to the central admission policy.

Professor Junaid Sarfaz Khan said that merit list for private medical and dental colleges would be displayed on 1st December 2016.
