Reacting to widespread panic after an accusation by the Supreme Court, the nation’s pakora-sellers have assured their customers that their products are not packed in stories by Asad Kharal.
The bench had castigated the lawyer of the PTI for submitting newspaper clippings as evidence and had said these were inadmissible in the court of law. That they are only entertaining and are used to wrap pakoras the next day.
This revelation led to widespread panic and affected the consumer confidence index in general and the pakora and samosa market in particular over apprehensions that some of those pakoras might be wrapped in newspapers that have reports filed by Lahore-based journalist Asad Kharal.
“We would like to assure our loyal customers that none, I repeat, none of our products are wrapped in news reports written by Asad Kharal, “ said Hameed Bhatti, General secretary of the Anjuman-e-Pakora-Faroshaan. “We owe this much to our customers.”
“That is right,” said Hassan Mujtaba, President of the association. “Our bare-minimum is covering our wares in stories filed by Rauf Klasra, and that too, when there is absolutely nothing else available.”
Some were still sceptical of the association’s plea of ignorance. “The Punjab Food Authority rules on the matter are clear,” said Ayesha Mumtaaz, director operations over at the PFA. “We cannot allow any food items within a radius of 10 meters of any story filed by Asad Kharal, let alone wrap food items with them.”
“But I have a feeling they still follow this hideous practice.”
