The World Food Programme (WFP) has launched a nine-month operation to assist Afghanistan by providing emergency food and funds in dealing with the growing numbers of returnees from Pakistan, as well as internally displaced people.

According to WFP, more than one million people are expected to be on the move across the country by the end of the year. Thousands of refugees are now crossing the border every day at the main entry point of Torkham, some with identity papers and some without.

Meanwhile the United Nations has appealed for $152 million to provide shelter, sanitation and food for a huge influx of refugees returning to Afghanistan from Pakistan.
