Police arrested around 50 employees of the Irrigation Department from outside the Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Monday.
The employees were protesting in demand of the payment of their salaries’ arrears, service quota, son quota and government residence.
The police tried to stop them through baton charge and fired teargas shells to disperse them. However, this did not quell the protesters and they reorganised and started to march towards the Sindh Assembly. At that point, the police turned on them with water cannons, arrested them, and transferred them to the Artillery Medan police station.
Many demonstrators were left injured. The police justified the injuries by saying that the protestors tried to enter the red zone, and therefore they had to take appropriate action against them.
