Board of Investment Chairman Miftah Ismail on Saturday wondered why some Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leaders have been glorifying the Musharraf’s regime’. He said that PTI leaders always highlighted that foreign debt was increasing slowly in Musharraf’s era but never mentioned the causes.

In his tweets, Miftah said that he often saw PTI leaders glorifying Musharraf regime but never saw them highlighting the fact that many western countries had written off Pakistan’s foreign debts in that period in order ‘to get Pakistan ready for the war on terror’.

Lashing out at PTI and Musharraf regime at the same time, he said that the PTI leaders never talked about the economic price that Pakistan was still paying for the war that Musharraf had started. “Cost in money, lives, fraying of the fabric of society”.

Playing humble, he said that PML-N also made mistakes and should be held accountable for the mistakes in 2018 elections by the public. “But don’t glorify dictatorship at the cost of democracy”.

  1. Does he think what is happening in the country is any better than Musharraf's rule ? In a way- Yes. Musharraf did not siphon billions and trillions of poor people's money out of the country and that too illegally. PM Sharif is afraid of going home without completing the tenure and for the Third time. This is why he is 'threatening' the Apex Court – directly and indirectly. Will not hesitate to attack the court – which he has done before.

  2. Board of Investment Chairman Miftah Ismail has criticised PTI, and asked them not to glorify dictatorship at the cost of democracy.
Now, Imran Khan often claimed that even Musharraf government (dictatorship) was better than this PML-N government (which is supposed to be a democracy). However, his words can hardly be interpreted as glorifying dictatorship. All they meant was that in relative terms, he considered Musharraf's rule to be better than that of PML-N, which is a fact.
And while Musharraf had some advantage due to peculiar conditions prevailing then, Nawaz Sharif also benefitted greatly from the fall of oil prices to nearly a third. And towards the abrupt end of Nawaz Sharif's previous rule, country's foreign exchange reserves had been nearly wiped out and he had even confiscated foreign currency held legally by Pakistanis in their foreign currentcy accounts, giving rupee equivalent later. Musharraf did nothing of the kind.
And Musharraf created empowered local bodies whereas the so-called democratic government in larger provinces stripped local bodies of most of the powers and even avoided holding local government election, finally holding these only under Supreme Court pressure. And now Supreme Court is pressurizing it to hold the much delayed population census. And during its last tenure, the PML-N govenment in Punjab passed two resolutions for the reinstatement of Bahawalpur and for the creation of South Punjab province but has reneged on both. And while Iceland's PM resigned because of Panama Papers scandal, Nawaz Sharif is hanging on shamelessly.
