Many people wonder that what’s the story behind the symbols of the Democratic party and Republicans party in US presidential election and it has something to do with history.

In 1828 presidential candidate of Democratic Party was Andrew Jackson, who was called jackass (donkey) by his Republicans rivals. Jackson said there was nothing wrong with a donkey and it is a very hardworking animal and never gets tired even after working for hours.

A cartoonist Thomas Nast published cartoons on a donkey and made the symbol famous, hence it became their symbol permanently. Andrew Jackson was also elected to be the president of USA.

Nast also played a role in making elephant the symbol of Republicans as he criticised the republican president Ulysses Grant by making an elephant, which also became their symbol after that.
