QAU Vice Chancellor Dr Javed Ashraf said Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) was on the hit list of terrorists due to its stature, but it is yet to construct its boundary wall due to encroachments, civic agencies’ failure to cooperate and lack of funds.
He expressed these views while addressing a press conference on Wednesday. He discussed the illegal occupation of varsity land that was causing creating problems for the administration.
The varsity recently wrote a letter to the Prime Minister’s Office, cabinet ministers and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) about the issue.
Several land grabbers encroached upon varsity land last year and the administration seemed helpless in securing the territory. Ashraf said Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration failed to do their job of protecting the land.
He pointed out that only 30 per cent of the boundary was completed, while the rest of the area remained uncovered due to the absence of clear demarcation and encroachments.
The university allocated Rs 50 million for the first phase of the project, but required another Rs 50 to 100 million.
The environment department of the CDA also stopped the varsity from constructing a boundary wall, he said. The reason that the authorities gave was that boundaries of QAU touched the National Margalla Hills Park. The CDA stopped the varsity from completing the first phase in January.
The VC said law enforcement agencies warned that the campus could be targeted in terror attacks, adding that it is the most insecure institute in the capital. He further told the university lacked security guards and only 130 guards, police are deployed for the security of the campus.
About 202 acres was encroached upon by various villagers and land grabbers, while 56 kanals of the property was held by former Senate chairman Syed Nayyar Bokhari, he said.
