The London event organised by the team of the Lahore-based literary festival was being described as a resounding success. Turned out to be a damp squib. None of the leading Pakistani literary lights showed up. Also conspicuous by their absence were some of the usual organisers of the function.

One of Pakistan’s most prestigious social clubs, this one in the city by the sea, held an important election recently.

Well, just the way national and provincial elections can have upsets, even an electoral college as small as this upscale-within-upscale club can also have an upset.

A grandee of the club, who has also held an important diplomatic position, and whilst own portrait hangs in the club, chose to contest the election himself. And lost. That, too, to a comparatively lesser wired in fellow.
