Law-enforcement agencies (LEAs) officials detained former Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Faisal Raza Abidi in Karachi late on Friday.

According to police, Abidi had been arrested on charges of a firing incident in Patel Para are in which two people were killed.

Abidi was taken into custody after police and Rangers personnel searched his house in the city’s New Rizvia Society for about half an hour, sources said. LEAs arrived at the former Senator’s residence in at least 10 vehicles, they said.

Law enforcement agencies have claimed that truckload arms were recovered from former Senator Faisal Raza Abidi’s house.

Some of his supporters claimed that Abidi held licenses of the recovered weapons, adding that the licenses were being deliberately concealed by the agencies.

The development comes hours after five members of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), including two prayer leaders, were shot and killed in three separate shooting incidents in Karachi on Friday.

Once a close confidant of former President Asif Ali Zardari, Abidi resigned from Senate and as PPP’s Karachi president in 2012 and 2013 respectively, after developing differences with the party leadership.

Abidi was accused of violating party discipline and repeatedly issuing statements in favour of the martial law.

Abidi, known for his firebrand speeches for his former party, Pakistan Peoples` Party (PPP), resigned from the Senate in 2014.

  1. The Firebrand is often seen on TV but never expected he hoarding Truck-load of weapons (if the
report is authentic). When FOUR truck load weapons were recovered by Police from an Azizabad
House adjacent to MQM's former HQ 90, Mr Gabol, an ex-MNA MQM (from Lyari) said that it was
tip of an Iceberg. With knowledge of Karachi Police, the political parties – MQM particularly, are
procuring and storing weapons for the last thirty years. The state of affairs in this country !
