A special anti-corruption and immigration court on Friday sentenced Nat Geo’s famous ‘Green-eyed girl’ Sharbat Gula to 15 days imprisonment in jail with a fine of Rs110,000.
The court also ordered that Sharbat Gula be deported to Afghanistan at the end of her sentence.
Sharbat Gula was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for illegally possessing a Pakistani computerised national identity card (CNIC). A case against her and three former National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) employees was registered on October 20.
During a bail hearing before a special court earlier this week, Sharbat Gula’s lawyer said she is the sole breadwinner of her family and is currently suffering from Hepatitis C.
The Federal Investigation Agency earlier today filed interim challan (charge sheet) against her over forgery to secure Pakistani Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC).
Judge Farah Jamshed Khan, who dismissed Sharbat Gula’s bail petition on Nov 2, directed that the suspect be produced on Friday in court, official sources informed.
An official in the know said the FIA had submitted the interim challan on Nov 1 as it had already completed its investigation against Sharbat Gula, who was arrested by the agency on Oct 26 from her house in Nauthia area.
He said the challan pointed out that the suspect had already admitted her guilt during her interrogation.
Sharbat Gula, who fled Afghanistan during Soviet occupation shot to fame after her photograph as a young refugee was published on the cover of National Geographic magazine back in 1985 on her arrival to Peshawar.
Dr Zakhilwal said Sharbat Gula will be travelling back to Afghanistan as soon as Monday where she is a beloved image and national icon. She will be met by President Ashraf Ghani upon her arrival to welcome her back home and help her with her resettlement.
Let the police boys have little fun for a few more days.
