The preparations to appoint Transparency International Pakistan’s former Head Adil Gilani as the Ambassador to Serbia seemed to have hit a snag.

According to sources, one of the lobbies within the government has reservations over Adil Gilani’s appointment as they believe that the appointment will give the opposition another opportunity to raise an issue against the government.

This group has also shared its viewpoint with the prime minister and his friends. Sources claim that due to the reservations of these leaders, the federal government is seriously reconsidering its decision to appoint Adil Gilani as Ambassador to Serbia. Last year, Adil Gilani was appointed as a consultant to the Prime Minister’s inspection team. It must be noted that the performance of Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was termed as unsatisfactory and disappointing while the performance of Punjab government was termed excellent when Gilani headed Transparency International.

Critics of Gilani’s possible appointment have said that the role of diplomacy is seriously hurt when diplomatic positions are given to inexperienced people on the basis of personal likes or dislikes. The appointed individual is not in a capacity to provide required outcomes. According to statistics, 27 non-diplomats have been appointed as ambassadors of Pakistan in different countries. If Adil Gilani is appointed as an ambassador, he will be the 28th person.

  1. Ah, the appointment book. It's been with us for a long time. And it comes in many sizes, from small, pocket-sized ones for people "on the go" to larger varieties as big as photo albums.
