Mental Health Act to be amended: draft law prepared

Responding to the needs of modern age  and to define latest mental disorders, the Mental Health Act-2001 will be amended for which draft law has been prepared by the Psychiatry Department of King Edward Medical University (KEMU).

This was disclosed in a meeting of Advisor to Chief Minister Punjab on Health Kh. Salman Rafique with the Head of Psychiatry Department of KEMU Prof. Aftab Asif, in Civil Secretariat on Tuesday. Secretary Health (Technical) Dr. Mohsin and Senior Law Officer Rafi Ahmed were also present in the meeting.

Prof. Aftab narrated that after the tragic incident of Army Public School Peshawar, a Psycho Trauma Centre was established in Mayo Hospital where affected persons of different incidents were treated and rehabilitated. He said there was a need to amend the mental health act according to modern requirements and to resolve psychological problems.

On this occasion, Prof. Aftab Asif presented an amended draft prepared by the KEMU. Kh. Salman Rafique directed the Senior Law Officer and Dr. Mohsin to review the draft for which experts and renowned psychiatrists would also be consulted.

Advisor to Chief Minister Punjab on Health Kh. Salman Rafique said the next step would be to approach the Law Department to finalize the draft law.
