Govt committed to protecting human rights, minister tells EU delegation

Federal Minister for Human Rights Senator Kamran Michael assured a European Union (EU) delegation of protection of human rights in the country, adding that the government is fully committed to implementing the United Nations resolutions, as it is our national responsibility.

He expressed these views while talking to the EU delegates for Human Rights in a meeting held in Islamabad on Tuesday. The delegation was led by Gus Houttuin from European External Actions Services (EEAS), Dietmar Krissler, Andreas Julin, DG Trade, Rudi Delarue, DG Employment, Additional Secretary Humaira Azam.

Director General Human Rights Hassan Mangi briefed the delegation regarding GSP + Status and implementation of UN’s human rights conventions.  The delegation was also informed about prevailing human rights situation in the country including implementations of laws and policies.

Kamran Michael said that GSP+ status has not only enhanced business and trade relations activities but is also it a tool for supporting positive change in the country. Constitution of Pakistan grantees the human rights protection and we at Ministry of Human Rights ensures it implementations, he said.

Addressing the meeting, Kamran Michael said steps have been taken through comprehensive strategy to ensure the protection of human rights including the rights of women, children and minorities.

Members of the delegation appreciated the endeavours of the incumbent government especially the Ministry of Human Rights for the Protection and promotion of human rights assuring their full support in this regard.
