The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday adjourned the hearing of bail application filed by Anwar Ahmed Zai, the chairman, Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK), as it was told that the petitioner’s counsel was busy in conducting the Bar election.
Anwar Ahmed Zai, who also served as chairman Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) and in-charge of inter examination in Mirpurkhas, was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in August 2016 on the charges of embezzlement, illegal appointments and out of turn promotions in the different boards during his tenure.
When the SHC bench, headed by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto, began the hearing on Monday, it was told that Salah-ud-Din Ahmed advocate, who was representing Ahmed Zai, was busy in conducting the elections on which the court adjourned the hearing.
Earlier, chairman BSEK approached the SHC seeking post-arrest bail as he had maintained that neither he was not involved in any corruption nor he ever misused his powers. He added that all the charges labelled against him were baseless; therefore he should be granted a bail.
In its reply NAB had submitted that the inquiry was initiated against Ahmed Zai on the complaint of a board official and during the investigation it was found that the accused while misusing his powers, had recruited several persons on different posts including librarian, assistant examination controller and deputy director research.
“The Illegal appointments and out-of-turn promotions had caused more than Rs 135 million to the national exchequer. The concrete evidences of corruption were found against Zai and he was not entitled to any discount, therefore his plea should be rejected,” NAB’s reply added.
