Maryam Nawaz, through her counsel, has sent a notice to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Information secretary, Naeemul Haq, to retract his statement about her being “responsible for security leak”, offer a public apology, or else face legal action worth Rs 1 billion in damages.
Maryam Nawaz posted the notice sent to Naeemul Haq by Sardar kareem Ilyas, advocate, Supreme Court, on her twitter account on Monday night.
Minister of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage, Pervaiz Rashid, resigned on October 29, over the leak and publication of a story that military leadership said “breached national security”.
A statement from PM office says the premier directed Rashid to step down so that an independent and detailed inquiry into the incident could be carried out.
“An inquiry committee including senior officers of ISI, MI and IB is being formed by the Government of Pakistan to clearly apportion blame, identify interests and motives and expose all those responsible for this episode for stern action in the national interest,” it added.
The story -leaked or planted according to varying reactions- concerned a meeting between the top civil and military leadership concerning containment of terrorism.
Dawn published the story on October 6, in which journalist Cyril Almeida had written about an alleged civil-military rift during the National Security Committee (NSC) meeting over the issue of tackling jihadi outfits.
The story drew an outpour of criticism with the military stating that it had been fed to the reporter and demanding investigations into it. It cost Almeida placement of his name on the Exit Control List for less than a week, before the government eventually lifted his travel ban.
