Couple killed for ‘honour’ on orders of jirga

Armed men gunned down two including husband and wife on decision of a village council (jirga) for entering into love marriage. Police arrested six members of the jirga during a crackdown on Thursday.

According to details, the deceased named Asmat and Irfana tied a knot without the consent of their families a year ago. The couple fled from their homes to get married and started living in Shah Latif Town.

A jirga comprising members of families of the couple was held which ordered the murder of the couple for ‘dishonouring’ their families.

On the decision of the village council, armed men barged into rental house acquired by the couple in Shah Latif Town, Karachi, and gunned down the couple before fleeing the scene.

The bodies were shifted to hospital for post-mortem and the police during a raid arrested six members of the village council that issued decree of murder. They were being interrogated after registration of a case against them at respective police station.
