Man commits suicide by jumping off Civic Centre building in Karachi

A retired government servant jumped from the Civic Centre building in Karachi and committed suicide, police said.

According to sources the deceased, a retired employee of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation had arrived at the fourth floor of the Civic Centre to get his electricity bill corrected, however, his queries were not entertained, after which he jumped from the building.

Eyewitnesses said that passersby got him into an ambulance in order to take him to the hospital, but he succumbed to his wounds on the way.

Deputy Mayor Arshad Vohra denied reports that the deceased had come to get his pension. “His pension had been dispatched last month,” he said.

Police said they found his identity card and Rs 32 from his pocket. They tried to contact the phone number on his national identity card multiple times but no one picked up. His body will be handed over to his family after postmortem, police added.

An investigation into the incident is underway.
