The Supreme Court Thursday (today) issued a notice to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Hasan Nawaz, Hussain Nawaz, Capt (R) Safdar, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, director general Federal Investigation Agency, chairman Federal Board of Revenue, and the attorney general on account of Panama Papers leaks.

A three-member bench presided by the Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali heard the petitions including two petitions filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf calling for the disqualification of the prime minister.

The case has been adjourned for two weeks.

On August 28, Hamid Khan and Naeem Bukhari filed a constitutional petition on behalf of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairperson Imran Khan. The petition sought disqualification of PM and members of his family for their alleged involvement in Panama Papers scandal.

Following the hearing, PTI chief Imran Khan talked to reporters and vowed to bring “king” Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif under law. He said the court hearing was the first step in the accountability process.

Another petition filed by the Jamat-e-Islami Chief Siraj ul Haq demands that all the allegations against the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) be asked to investigate all Pakistani companies named in the Panama Papers.

Sheikh Rasheed from Awami Muslim League has demanded that a commission be formed to investigate the allegations in the Panama Papers.

Meanwhile, a lesser known Watan Party has demanded in its petition the Supreme Court is not legible to form the commission to investigate charges of the Panama Papers, and the role should passed on to the parliament. The petition was rejected by the apex court.

Earlier on Wednesday, Imran Khan said the premier is under a wrong impression about forming a government in 2018 because that day is too far. “Thousands of people will gather in Islamabad on November 2,” the PTI chairman said. “People have realised that Nawaz Sharif needs to be held accountable to purge this country of corruption.”

Imran reiterated that his protest in the federal capital won’t end unless the premier stepped down or returned the ‘looted money’ to the exchequer.

The government and the opposition parties have been unable to evolve joint Terms of Reference (ToR). While the government insists that investigation should involve all those named in corruption cases, opposition parties, mainly PTI says that it should begin with the assets of the premier’s family.

On May 13, Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali declined government’s request to form a commission to investigate the leaks, saying legislation by the parliament as well as resolution of the ToRs issue needed to be resolved first.

  1. Supreme Court better beware of Nawaz Sharif's attack on Supreme court of 90s. He has corrupted the whole system to an extent that no justice or accountability of ruling families of Sharifs and Zardaris is possible.

  2. The attack on Supreme Court was carried out because of a COAS who failed to protect the supreme judiciary. This COAS came from a Shiekh business family of Sialkot which ran a,Super Store and a petrol pump in Sialkot cantt.
