What we should take away from it
Modi’s attempt to paint Pakistan as a regional menace in front of the BRICS nations by using phrases such as the “mother ship” and “ivy league” of terrorism did not garner the desired result. While Russian president Vladimir Putin refrained from mentioning terrorism at all in his speech, let alone Pakistan centric terrorism, China defended us by stressing upon a “political solution” for “regional hotspots” – an indication towards Indian atrocities in Kashmir.
The successes India has had so far with its ‘isolate Pakistan’ strategy, the SAARC summit postponement for example, is in fact more of a consequence of our diplomatic failures than Modi’s lobbying to get the likes of Afghanistan and Bangladesh on his side and shun Pakistan. The US has only partially adopted India’s mantra as it refrains from categorically blaming us of state sponsored terrorism but at the same time pushes us to do more against the Haqqani Network.
Both the US and China take into account their interests with both India and Pakistan when taking any position on our relations. Similarly India cannot take too tough a position with the two either. With the US there is the massive defence agreement signed just a month back not to mention vested economic interests. With China there is the NSG membership that India so badly wants and China continues to refuse in the absence of a non-proliferation treaty.
China continues to defend us internationally by shifting focus on Indian atrocities in Kashmir when the Uri or Pathankot attacks are mentioned and by constantly blocking the ban on JeM chief Masood Azhar. According to recent revelations however they too are growing tired of continuously blocking the ban while there is inaction on our part against the Haqqani Network, Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar.
It is therefore imperative for us to make new alliances and mend old relations. For that there first has to be action against the groups and individuals that an increasing number of countries are asking us to take.
