Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Waseem Akhtar on Thursday said fakes cases were registered against him, but he will not back off as he was an elected mayor of Karachi.

Talking to media after appearing before an anti-terrorism court in connection with his bail plea in the May 12 incident, Akhtar said he was elected by the people of Karachi and he would not run, but would serve the nation.

Earlier, Akhtar told the court that fake cases were lodged against him. He said he was an adviser to the chief minister and was present at the Governor’s House when the (May 12) incident took place.

The prosecution lawyer informed the court that Akhtar had confessed to police that he had ordered halting the rally of the former chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry on the day at any cost.

Akhtar, however, rejected his confessional statement in the custody and said his statement and the police record were different.

His counsel Khawaja Naveed said that his client’s confessional statement in the May 12 incident was baseless and that the police had detained his client without the court’s permission and named him in the case.

He also alleged that Rao Anwar had filed 27 forged cases against Akhtar in one night while Khushbakht Shujaat and Farooq Sattar were given security.

The court directed the police to submit a challan in the case and adjourned the hearing till October 18.

Waseem Akhtar was sent to the central jail in the capacity of an accused in a terror case launched against former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussain and the May 12 tragedy case.

Akhtar’s plea for extension in interim bail was also rejected by an anti-terrorism court in the aforementioned cases.

He was nominated in the case that was registered under terror charges in November last year with the North Nazimabad Police Station.
