Capital’s new Building Control Authority only weeks away from inception

BCA expected to earn billions of rupees as it aims to regulate construction in sectors, towns and rural areas of Islamabad

Islamabad is all set to embrace Islamabad Building Control Authority which will oversee the present Building Control Section of Capital Development Authority’s Directorate of Planning and Design. The groundwork, documentation and feasibility report in this regard have been completed and the case waiting for approval with the Ministry of Law from where it will only require Cabinet’s nod.

Islamabad’s Mayor and acting Chairman CDA Shaikh Anser Aziz is personally spearheading the campaign because this authority is much needed to end illegal constructions and encroachments that dot many sectors, town and rural areas of Islamabad.

It is also expected that the government will earn billion of rupees per annum in revenue from the regulatory body as after the BCA’s inception and formulation of its by-laws, all the area in and around the Capital would come under CDA’s jurisdiction.

Recently, the Building Control Section of CDA made it to the news when it shut down Safa Gold Mall for a whole week and Islamabad High Court had to intervene. Grand Hyatt Hotel site was also closed down when officials found out that two apartment towers had been constructed by the contractor against the approved design.

The Building Control Section of CDA has a dubious repute among the masses as multiple scandals have surfaced in recent months, many relating to violation of building code pertaining to high-rising buildings in capital and issuance of NOCs to the non-conforming use of residential areas.

“We are working diligently on the new Building Control Authority and have completed the necessary groundwork. The file has already been sent to Law Ministry for further vetting and soon it’ll be inaugurated,” said Malik Salim, Media Deputy Director, while talking to Pakistan Today.
